A better way to learn city locations
Capital quizzes test names, and distance games tell you whether a guess is warm or cold. Pin the City asks for a geographic judgement before giving any help. You have to translate what you know about a city into a position on the world map, which builds a stronger mental model of continents, coasts and relative location.
Use the country as your first anchor, then look for coastlines, nearby seas and the city’s position within the country. Madrid sits near the centre of Spain; Sydney is on Australia’s southeast coast; Lima is on Peru’s Pacific side. For inland cities, compare the surrounding countries and latitude.
Coordinates and scoring: the city pool uses manually reviewed latitude and longitude points shared with Citydle. Your map position is converted back to geographic coordinates, then great-circle distance is calculated with the haversine formula. The 5,000-point curve rewards exceptional precision while keeping every round meaningful. Last reviewed .

FAQ
Pin the City questions
What is Pin the City?
Pin the City is a world map placement game. You are shown a famous city and country, then drop a pin where you think the city is located. The game reveals the true point, distance in kilometres and a proximity score.
How is the Pin the City score calculated?
Each city is worth up to 5,000 points. A pin within 25 kilometres earns the maximum; points then decrease smoothly as distance increases. Five rounds create a maximum tour score of 25,000.
Can I play Pin the City on a phone?
Yes. The map uses pointer controls designed for both touch and mouse input. Press and move your finger to position the pin, then release to drop it.
Which cities appear?
The curated pool contains more than 70 recognisable cities across every inhabited continent, using the same reviewed coordinates as TripMemo’s Citydle game.
Are distances driving distances?
No. Distance is the great-circle distance between your selected latitude and longitude and the city coordinate, calculated across Earth’s surface using the haversine formula.
