Citydle

Citydle turns world geography into a six-step navigation puzzle. Every guess produces two reliable clues: the great-circle distance to the target and the compass bearing toward it. A guess 900 kilometres northeast is more useful than a simple hot-or-cold colour because it tells you both how far to travel and which way to move.

Start with a city near the centre of a large region, such as London, Istanbul, Dubai or Singapore. The first arrow identifies the broad direction of travel. Your second guess should make a meaningful move along that bearing. Compare the new distance with the previous one, then use the two clue lines to narrow the likely area.

A strong second or third guess should cross the direction line rather than repeat the same path. If Paris points southeast and Rome points east, for example, the target is likely east of Rome and southeast of Paris. This process of comparing bearings is close to triangulation and quickly reduces a whole continent to a smaller region.

Distances are calculated between curated latitude and longitude coordinates using the haversine formula. This measures the shortest distance across Earth’s surface rather than driving distance or the path of a scheduled flight. Bearings are converted into clear compass directions, while the answer pool focuses on recognizable cities with manually reviewed coordinates so obscure or incorrectly located places do not make the puzzle unfair.
