How flight time and distance work
When you want to know how long a flight takes, two numbers matter: how far apart the cities are, and how fast a plane covers that gap. This calculator works out both, so you can sense-check an itinerary, compare routes or just settle a debate about which trip is really the long-haul one.
Why the distance is measured along a curve
Planes do not fly in the straight line you would draw on a flat map. The shortest route between two cities runs along a great circle, the path you would trace if you stretched a string tight across a globe. That is why a flight from London to Tokyo arcs north over Siberia rather than heading due east, and why this tool uses great-circle distance as the basis for every estimate.
How the flight time is estimated
We take that great-circle distance, divide it by a realistic average ground speed for a jet airliner, and add a fixed allowance for taxiing, take-off, climb, descent and landing. The result is the in-air time for a nonstop flight. It will not match a timetable to the minute, because real flights are shaped by air-traffic routing, the jet stream and how busy each airport is, but it lands close for most journeys. A tailwind on the way home can shave half an hour off a long-haul leg, while a stiff headwind adds it back.
Time difference and jet lag
The result also shows how many hours ahead or behind your destination sits, which is the number that really drives jet lag. A loose rule is that it takes about a day to adjust for every time zone you cross. Flying east, where you lose hours, is usually harder than flying west, so it is worth planning a gentle first day after a big eastbound trip and getting into daylight as soon as you land.
