Four kinds of tipping culture

Most of the world falls into one of four patterns. Knowing which one you are in saves you from over-tipping or accidentally offending.

๐Ÿ’ต

Tipping expected

Tipping is part of the wage here, so a tip is expected for most services. Skipping it is seen as rude.

๐Ÿ™‚

Tipping customary

A modest tip is normal and appreciated for good service, though not as large as in the United States.

Round up the bill

Service is often included. Rounding up or leaving small change is the norm rather than a percentage.

Tipping not expected

Tipping is not part of the culture and can even cause confusion. A polite thank you is enough.

Tipping, answered

How much should I tip when travelling?
It depends entirely on the country. In the United States and Canada a 15 to 20 percent tip is expected. Across much of Europe, service is included and you simply round up the bill. In Japan, South Korea and much of Oceania, tipping is not expected at all. Pick a country in the calculator above to see the local norm for restaurants, taxis, hotels and guides.
How does this tipping calculator work?
Choose the country you are visiting and enter your bill. Where a percentage tip is customary, the calculator shows a suggested tip range and the total, and can split it between your party. Where tipping is not based on a percentage (rounding up, or no tip at all), it shows the local guidance instead. All amounts are in the local currency.
Which countries expect tipping and which do not?
Tipping is expected in the United States, Canada and Egypt. It is customary but smaller (around 10 percent) across the UK, Mexico, much of Asia and the Middle East. In most of continental Europe you just round up because service is included. And in Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, New Zealand and Iceland, tipping is generally not expected.
Should I tip in cash or on the card?
Cash is safest, because it goes straight to the staff and works even where card machines have no tip option. In countries like the United States, card tipping is normal and the machine will prompt you. In several countries (such as Argentina and Italy) cash is preferred or expected for tips even when you pay the bill by card.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
Not quite. A service charge is added to the bill by the restaurant, often 10 to 12.5 percent, and may or may not reach the staff. A tip is the extra you choose to leave. Always check whether a service charge is already on the bill before adding a tip, so you do not pay twice.
In the United States, do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Either is fine and the difference is small. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the full total is common and generous. The calculator applies the percentage to whatever bill amount you enter.
Do you tip in Europe?
Usually only a little. In most of Europe a service charge is included and you just round up the bill or leave 5 to 10 percent for good service. The UK and parts of southern Europe lean toward 10 percent, while in Switzerland, Scandinavia and Iceland nothing extra is expected at all.
How much should I tip a tour guide?
For a full-day tour, around 10 to 20 percent or the local equivalent of $10 to $20 per person is typical, and about half that for the driver. For a short two-hour walking tour, $2 to $5 per person is fine. Private guides generally expect a little more than group tours.
Should I tip hotel housekeeping and porters?
Where tipping is customary, leave the local equivalent of $1 to $2 per bag for porters and $1 to $5 per night for housekeeping, ideally daily since staff rotate. In no-tipping countries such as Japan and South Korea it is not expected.
Is tipping a global custom?
No. Tipping as an obligation is largely an American norm. Roughly 70 percent of the world has little or no tipping culture, and in much of Europe and Asia staff earn a full wage, so a tip is a small bonus for exceptional service rather than something expected.
How much do you tip in the US compared to Europe?
In the United States 15 to 20 percent is expected because tips form part of a server's wage. In Europe service is usually built into the price, so 5 to 10 percent, or simply rounding up the bill, is already generous.
