How to get better at state outlines
Begin with distinctive shapes. Florida has a long peninsula, Texas has a broad southern point, Michigan is split across two peninsulas, and Oklahoma has a narrow western panhandle. Coastlines and international borders usually create more recognisable edges than straight surveyed boundaries.
For rectangular western states, compare proportions and neighbours rather than looking for a dramatic landmark. Colorado and Wyoming are close to rectangles; Kansas and Nebraska are wider; Utah has a stepped northeast corner. In the east, rivers and coastlines create subtler irregularities, so distance and direction clues become more valuable.
Map and distance methodology: silhouettes come from the same reviewed SVG boundary asset used by TripMemo’s interactive US maps. Distances use the haversine formula between approximate state geographic centres and are rounded to the nearest mile. Is Statele the same as the US States Map Game?
No. Statele asks you to name one mystery outline in six guesses. The US States Map Game names a state and asks you to locate it on a full map as quickly as possible.
How are Statele distances calculated?
Distances are approximate great-circle miles between reviewed geographic centres of the guessed state and target state. They are not driving distances.
Can I play Statele unlimited?
Yes. Statele unlimited creates a fresh state outline whenever you want to practise, while the daily mode gives everyone the same shared challenge.
Are Alaska and Hawaii included?
Yes. All 50 US states can appear, including Alaska and Hawaii. The District of Columbia is not part of the answer pool.
