A better way to memorise the 50 states
Lists teach names, but a map quiz teaches relationships. Colorado becomes the rectangle below Wyoming. Tennessee becomes the long state above Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia. New England becomes a compact group rather than six disconnected answers. Those visual anchors make every later round faster.
Start with Quick Round to learn the interaction, then move into Marathon mode. When a state is difficult, study the states around it rather than memorising it alone. Grouping the map into the Northeast, Midwest, South and West turns one intimidating set of 50 into smaller patterns you can recognise.
State names, postal codes, regions and divisions come from TripMemo's maintained states dataset, using the US Census Bureau's four-region model. Washington, DC is excluded from the 50-state scoring pool. Game content reviewed 13 July 2026.

What is the US States Map Game?
The US States Map Game is an interactive geography quiz that names a state and asks you to tap its location on a map of the United States.
How many states are in the quiz?
Marathon mode includes all 50 states. Quick Round selects 12 states for a shorter speed challenge.
Does the quiz include Washington, DC?
No. Washington, DC is a federal district rather than one of the 50 states, so it is not included in the scoring round.
Can I use the game to learn all 50 states?
Yes. A correct state turns orange, a wrong tap flashes red, and three misses reveal the answer. Repeating Marathon mode builds location recall.
Does the states map quiz work on phones?
Yes. The game is designed for touch, supports pinch and drag gestures, uses large controls, and respects the safe area on modern phones.
How does scoring work?
First-try answers earn the most points. Fast answers add a speed bonus, and consecutive first-try answers build a streak bonus.
Is there a timed mode?
Every round records your time, while the score also rewards fast individual answers. Quick Round is the best format for a short timed challenge.
Can I replay the US map quiz?
Yes. You can replay both Quick Round and Marathon mode as often as you like, and the game saves your best score on the device.
What is the best way to memorise US states?
Learn in geographic groups, such as New England, the Great Lakes, the Mountain West and the Southeast. Then use Marathon mode to connect those smaller groups into one complete map.
