FAQ

Common questions

How do you decide if tap water is safe in a country?
We blend CDC Travelers’ Health country pages, WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme drinking-water data, UK FCDO travel advice, and consensus traveller guidance. When sources disagree, we err on the side of caution — a borderline country gets the lower rating. Every per-country page links out to the official sources so you can verify before travelling.
Why do you say "mostly safe" for some countries with treated tap water?
A country might have safe water at the treatment plant but variable quality after that — old building plumbing, rooftop tanks, or rural supplies that don't reach the same standard. ‘Mostly safe’ means cities and treated supplies are fine but bottled is sensible in rural areas or older buildings.
Is the tap water in [a specific country] safe?
Yes — search for the country in the search box above or click any country on the map. Each of the 195 country pages explains whether tap water is safe to drink, brush teeth with, and use for ice, plus regional variations.
When was this data last reviewed?
Last reviewed 2026-04-29. We update ratings whenever a country's tap water situation changes (e.g. after major infrastructure events, advisory changes, or new WHO data). The last-reviewed date is shown on every per-country page.
Can I brush my teeth with tap water if it’s rated unsafe?
For countries rated "avoid", we recommend bottled water for brushing teeth too — small amounts swallowed during brushing can still transmit waterborne pathogens like Giardia or norovirus. For "caution" countries, brushing is usually fine for most people but the safer choice is bottled if you have a sensitive stomach.
Is ice in restaurants safe in countries where tap water isn’t?
It depends. Reputable restaurants and hotels in tourist areas usually make ice from purified water — but street vendors and cheap restaurants may use tap. The general rule: if the tap water isn’t safe, ask whether the ice is made from filtered water before ordering.
What about hot drinks like coffee and tea?
Boiling water for at least one minute kills most pathogens, so hot tea and coffee from properly boiled water are generally safe even where tap water isn’t. Be wary of warm drinks that may not have been brought to a full boil.
Should I bring a water filter or just buy bottled?
Both work. A reusable water bottle with a built-in filter (LifeStraw, Grayl, Sawyer) saves money and plastic on long trips through unsafe-water regions. Bottled is more convenient for short trips. UV pens (SteriPEN) are effective but require clear water.
