Brooklyn Bridge at Dawn

Brooklyn Bridge, New York

Alarm at 5:15am. Worth it. Walking east as the sun rose behind the Manhattan skyline. The towers turning pink, then gold, then silver. Runners and cyclists but few tourists. Halfway across, I stopped to look back at Brooklyn, then forward at Manhattan. Two different worlds connected by wood and steel. A century ago, this was the tallest thing on the skyline. Now it's dwarfed by glass towers. But it's still here. Still carrying people between the city and its neighbor. Some things earn their fame.

Photo Captions

  • The alarm was painful. The light was worth it.
  • Manhattan waking up behind the cables.
  • The wooden boards that have held millions.

Dollar Slice Philosophy

Joe's Pizza, Greenwich Village

The fold. The grease dripping. The first bite that burns the roof of your mouth because you couldn't wait. New York pizza isn't complicated—dough, sauce, cheese—but somehow it's irreplicable anywhere else. The water, they say. The ovens. The attitude. I stood on the sidewalk at 1am eating a slice that cost less than a subway ride. A guy in a suit next to me. A couple in formal wear. A delivery driver. All of us silent, eating, staring at nothing. This is New York communion.

Photo Captions

  • The fold is non-negotiable.
  • When the cheese does this, you know.
  • 1am sidewalk fine dining.
