Sunset at Griffith
Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles
The hike up wasn't optional—the parking lot was full. Twenty minutes of sweat and complaining, then the trail opened up and there it was: the Hollywood Sign to the right, the entire LA basin below, the Pacific Ocean glittering on the horizon. I found a spot on the lawn as the sky turned orange, then pink, then purple. The city lights flickered on like a circuit board coming to life. Someone nearby was playing guitar. A coyote howled somewhere in the canyon. This is why people move here and never leave.

Taco Truck Revelation
East Los Angeles
Followed a tip from a local: find the truck with the longest line, ignore the ones with empty windows. Found it on a random corner in East LA. Ordered al pastor because the guy running the spit looked like an artist. The taco was $2. It was the best thing I've eaten in California. Charred pineapple, crispy pork edges, onion and cilantro, two salsas that made my eyes water. I ordered three more. The woman next to me in line spoke no English; I spoke no Spanish. We both nodded at the tacos. That was enough.
