The Tower That Shouldn't Exist
Burj Khalifa, Dubai
You can't see the top from the ground. Your neck gives up before your eyes do. The elevator takes a full minute to reach the observation deck, and your ears pop twice on the way. Then the doors open and you're standing above the clouds. The other skyscrapers—buildings that would dominate any other skyline—look like toys. The cars are ants. The boats are dots. The Palm Jumeirah sprawls like a child's drawing come to life. Humans built this. In the desert. In twenty years. The audacity is overwhelming. So is the view.

One Dirham Across History
Dubai Creek, Dubai
The abra costs one dirham. About 27 cents. It takes five minutes to cross the Creek, and in those five minutes you travel between centuries. On one side, the towers of modern Dubai—glass and steel and impossible ambition. On the other, the wind towers of Al Fahidi, the bustling souks, the wooden dhows that have been trading here for generations. The water taxi is the same design as a hundred years ago. The driver steers with his foot. The engine putters. Businessmen in kanduras sit next to tourists in shorts. This is the Dubai that existed before the oil, before the towers, before the world knew its name.
