On Top of the Table
Table Mountain, Cape Town
The cable car floor rotates on the way up, so everyone gets the full view. Nobody needed it—we were all too busy pressing against the windows. Then the doors opened at the top and the wind hit like a welcome. The mountain is flat but the views aren't. On one side, the city spreads to the harbor. On another, Camps Bay glitters below. Robben Island sits in the bay, small from here but looming large in history. Lion's Head pokes up like a curious neighbor. I walked to the edge, sat on a rock, and understood why the Khoisan called this place "the mountain of the sea."

Colors of Bo-Kaap
Bo-Kaap, Cape Town
Every house is a different color—turquoise, pink, lime, orange—but the story behind them is the same. The Cape Malay community, descendants of slaves brought by the Dutch, painting their homes in defiance during apartheid when they weren't allowed to own them. Now they can. The colors stayed, a rainbow of resilience. I wandered the steep cobblestone streets, talked to a woman selling koesisters from her doorstep, listened to the call to prayer from the mosque. This is Cape Town too—not just Table Mountain and beaches, but layers of history still being written in primary colors.
