Morning at the Rice Terraces

Tegallalang, Bali

Got there at 6:30am. Mist still hanging in the valleys. Farmers already at work, ankle-deep in water, backs bent to the task they've done for centuries. The green—I've never seen green like this. Layer upon layer stepping down the hillside, water reflecting the pink morning sky. So quiet you could hear the drip of irrigation. A woman walked past with an offering on her head, going somewhere sacred. I stood on a path between paddies and felt very small and very grateful. This is what I came to Bali to find.

The Offering I Almost Stepped On

Ubud, Bali

I almost crushed it. A tiny basket of palm leaves, flowers, rice, incense—placed on the sidewalk outside a shop. I caught myself just in time. Then I started noticing them everywhere. On motorbike seats. In front of ATMs. On temple steps. On the beach. Three times a day, Balinese women create these offerings and place them for the gods. Not for special occasions—for every single day. Gratitude as a practice, not an exception. I've never thought to thank the universe for an ordinary Tuesday. Maybe I should start.

  • The offering that stopped me in my tracks.
  • Every flower placed with intention.
  • Incense still rising from this morning's prayer.
