ETIAS will likely be required
Visa-exempt short-stay travellers from this country are expected to need ETIAS once the system enforces. Apply only via the official EU ETIAS portal. Beware of look-alike sites that charge inflated fees.

Transitional period
You will not be turned away on day one
After launch, the EU has confirmed a transitional period during which travelling without ETIAS will not be refused at the border, followed by a grace period that only excuses first-time arrivals. Full enforcement is expected several months later.

- Captures every entry and exit
Avoid scams
Apply only via the official ETIAS portal
- Sites with names that look like the official portal but charge inflated "service" fees
- Sponsored ads on search engines that promise faster ETIAS approval
- Emails asking for your passport scan to "pre-register" before launch
- Anyone charging you to apply before the official application portal is open
Frequently asked questions
ETIAS FAQ
Is ETIAS open for applications now?
As of 6 May 2026, the official EU information says ETIAS is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026. Applications are not open yet, and there will be a transitional period before ETIAS is fully enforced.
How much does ETIAS cost?
The official EU ETIAS fee is €20. Applicants under 18 or over 70 are exempt from the fee but still need to apply. Always pay only via the official ETIAS portal.
Is ETIAS a visa?
No. ETIAS is a travel authorisation, similar to the US ESTA or the UK ETA. It is faster, cheaper and lighter-weight than a Schengen visa, and it is only available to nationals of visa-exempt countries.
How long does ETIAS take to process?
Most decisions within minutes. Up to 30 days if a manual review is needed if you are flagged for further checks. Apply at least a few days before travel.
How long is ETIAS valid?
Up to 3 years (or until your passport expires). You can use it for multiple short stays during that period, but each stay is still capped by the Schengen 90 days in any rolling 180-day period rule.
Which European countries require ETIAS?
30 European countries are in scope: the Schengen Area plus Cyprus. Ireland is NOT in scope and uses its own short-stay rules. The full list is on this page.
Do children need ETIAS?
Yes. Children of all ages need their own ETIAS, but the application fee is waived for travellers under 18.
Do I need ETIAS for an airport layover?
If you stay airside (in international transit) and do not enter the Schengen Area, you generally do not need ETIAS. If you go landside or change airports, you do.
What if my ETIAS application is refused?
You will get an email explanation, and you have the right to appeal in the country that refused you. You can also correct any data errors and reapply.
What is the difference between ETIAS and the UK ETA?
Different schemes. ETIAS is for the EU/Schengen Area + Cyprus. The UK ETA is the United Kingdom's separate authorisation. Travelling London → Paris means you may need both.
What is the difference between ETIAS and EES?
EES (the Entry/Exit System) is the EU's biometric border-crossing record system, which went live earlier in 2026. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorisation that reuses EES infrastructure. They are separate and you need both at the right moment.
Will I be denied entry without ETIAS at launch?
Not immediately. The EU has confirmed a transitional period after launch during which entry without ETIAS will not be refused. Full enforcement is expected several months later.
