The City From Above
Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro
Took the train up through the Tijuca Forest, emerged into blinding sunlight. And there He was—arms spread wide over a city that seems impossible. Mountains covered in forest. White sand crescents of beach. The lagoon like a blue mirror. Favelas climbing the hills in colorful cascades. From up here, Rio looks like a dream someone forgot to wake up from. The crowd pressed against the base, but when I looked up at Cristo's face, everything went quiet. Some statues are just statues. This one holds an entire city in its embrace.

When the Sun Goes Down at Arpoador
Arpoador, Rio de Janeiro
Someone told me people clap for the sunset here. I thought they were joking. They weren't. Hundreds gathered on the rocks between Copacabana and Ipanema. Vendors selling caipirinhas and beers. The Two Brothers mountain turning gold, then pink, then purple. And when the sun finally touched the sea, everyone applauded. Not ironically—genuinely. Cheering for the sun like it had just finished a performance. Because it had. Every night, Rio celebrates the end of the day like a gift. Maybe that's the secret to being this alive.
