Mixbook is made for designers; TripMemo is made for travel. If you want a cover drawn for where you went (524 of them, against Mixbook's dozen or so place themes), or a book the iPhone app builds from your trip with your route, TripMemo is the alternative we would choose. Here is how it compares with Mixbook, Shutterfly, Journi and Polarsteps.

Our pick
Why TripMemo, for a book of your trip
Mixbook gives you a blank canvas and a library of themes to fill it. TripMemo starts from the trip itself, and that shows in five places.
A cover for where you went. 524 illustrated covers, each drawn for a country, city or US state, where Mixbook has about a dozen themes named for a place.
Built from your trip. The TripMemo iPhone app turns your trip into pages day by day, with your notes, a map of the route you recorded, a page of trip stats and a QR code back to the trip.
Done in minutes, not evenings. On the web, pick a cover and add your photos: the studio lays them out, one to four to a page, and you change only what you want to.
Gloss as standard. TripMemo hardcovers are printed on 200gsm gloss photo paper, with no paper to choose and no upgrade to pay for.
A proof before you pay. See every page as it will print and download a PDF proof before you order.
Mixbook is the better choice for some books, and each alternative has its own case.
MixbookBest for the longest booksChoose Mixbook if your book needs more than 298 pages (it goes to 399), you want a 12 × 12 or 14 × 11 in book, or you enjoy designing every page.
ShutterflyBest for US printing and a designer serviceChoose Shutterfly if you're in the US and would like its designers to lay the book out for you, or you want a flush mount album.
JourniBest for AI drafts on AndroidChoose Journi if you want an AI-drafted book with maps on an Android phone, or more than 298 pages (it goes to 349).
PolarstepsBest for trips tracked in PolarstepsChoose Polarsteps if you tracked the whole trip in Polarsteps and want one landscape book of it, up to 400 pages.
Mixbook and the alternatives compared
The same questions put to every maker, with TripMemo first. For travel, the first three rows matter most: a cover for your destination, a book built from your trip and a map of your route.

From Mixbook's themes to TripMemo's covers
If you have designed a Mixbook book, here is how making one in TripMemo differs, and what stays the same.
1
A cover, not a theme
Instead of a theme to fill, pick the cover drawn for where you went (524 of them) or put your own photo on the front. Your title and year go on the cover and the spine.
2
Less designing, more done
Add your photos and the studio lays them out for you, one to four to a page. You can still change any layout, caption or photo, page by page.
3
Sizes in inches
Our square is 8.3 × 8.3 in, close to Mixbook's 8.5 × 8.5; our A4 portrait is 8.3 × 11.7 in, close to its 8.5 × 11; and our A4 landscape is 11.7 × 8.3 in, close to its 11 × 8.5.
4
When to stay with Mixbook
For a book of more than 298 pages (Mixbook goes to 399) or a 12 × 12 in book, Mixbook is the better fit. For most trips, 298 pages is plenty.
5
Canada and Australia
A hardcover is £11.50 to send to Canada (8 to 15 working days) and £7.50 to Australia (5 to 10). Prices are in pounds; your card converts them at checkout.
6
A proof before you pay
See every page as it will print and download a PDF proof before you order, so the book you open is the book you made.
Mixbook's travel themes include about a dozen named for places, such as Italy, Greece and Japan. TripMemo has 524 covers, each drawn for one country, city or US state.
Five photo cover styles take your best shot of the trip: Image runs it edge to edge, Editorial sets it beside your title, and Poster, Arch and Good days frame it in their own way. Every style prints your title on the spine.
Like Mixbook, the TripMemo studio works in any browser, but it lays the pages out for you. Or let the TripMemo iPhone app build the whole book from the trip you kept.

Mixbook and the other alternatives
A fair look at Mixbook, and at the other makers people weigh it against.
Mixbook: what it does well
Mixbook is a designer’s tool: a big library of themes, papers from Everyday semi-gloss to Premium lustre, and books from 6 × 6 to 14 × 11 in. Hardcovers and softcovers go up to 399 pages, more than any book we make, and layflat books to under 100.
Its glossy 8 × 6 in hardcover is $29.99 for 20 pages in its US store, C$40.99 in Canada and A$39.99 in Australia; it has a UK store too.
For a trip, the gaps are the cover (a theme, about a dozen of them named for a place) and the work: you design page by page from the photos you upload, with nothing built from your trip and no map of your route.
Choose Mixbook if your book needs more than 298 pages (it goes to 399), or you want to design every page from a big library of themes.
Shutterfly
Shutterfly prints in the US and offers a designer service that lays a book out for you within a day, plus flush mount albums. Its books go up to 111 pages, and its 8 × 8 in glossy hardcover lists at $39.98 for 20. See our Shutterfly comparison.
Choose Shutterfly if you're in the US and would like its designers to lay the book out for you, or you want a flush mount album.
Journi
Journi is a travel journal app that prints: its AI drafts a book from your photos with maps and dates, on iPhone, Android or the web, up to 349 pages, from From $19.99. Its covers are themes and passport stamps rather than artwork for your destination.
Choose Journi if you want an AI-drafted book with maps on an Android phone, or more than 298 pages (it goes to 349).
Polarsteps
Polarsteps prints a trip you tracked in its app as a Travel Book, in one landscape size (29.7 × 21 cm), up to 400 pages. Without a tracked trip, there is no book. See our Polarsteps alternative page.
Choose Polarsteps if you tracked the whole trip in Polarsteps and want one landscape book of it, up to 400 pages.
How we compared
We make TripMemo, so we have an interest: read this page with that in mind. To keep it fair, every figure for another maker comes from that maker’s own website or help centre, read on the day shown, and every TripMemo figure comes from our studio and our live prices. Prices are list prices before delivery and before any sale running that day. Most of these makers run frequent promotions, so check the price on the day you order.
We judged the books on what matters for a trip: a cover that says where you went, how much of the trip fits, how the book is made from your photos, paper and binding, and the price of a comparable book. We recheck every figure at least every 90 days. Spotted something out of date? Email support@tripmemo.app and we will correct it.
