Our pick for a trip is the TripMemo layflat. At £41.99 for a 21 × 21 cm square book, it has the lowest starting price of the hardcover layflats we checked, and takes a cover drawn for where you went, and its pages open completely flat, so a panorama runs across both pages without a fold. Here is how it compares on paper, pages, size and delivery.

Best layflat for a trip
The TripMemo layflat, our pick for a trip
Layflat is the book for your widest views: the binding lets every spread lie flat, so nothing in the middle of a photo disappears into the fold. Here is why ours is the one we would choose for a trip.
The lowest starting price. £41.99 for a 21 × 21 cm square layflat with 18 pages, against £47.79 to £56.99 for the cheapest hardcover layflat from the other makers we checked.
A cover for where you went. 524 illustrated covers, each drawn for a country, city or US state, print on the square layflat. Or put your own photo on the front.
Flat from edge to edge. Every spread opens completely flat on 190gsm lustre paper, whose soft sheen keeps reflections off an open page.
Landscape or square. Classic landscape (29.7 × 21 cm) gives a panorama the most room; square (21 × 21 cm) suits every kind of photo. 18 to 120 pages.
Made on the web, or from your trip. Make it in any browser and download a PDF proof before you pay, or let the TripMemo iPhone app build it from your trip.
Layflat books differ more than most. These are the cases where another maker's is the better buy.

How to choose a layflat photo book
Five checks decide whether a layflat suits your photos, and which one to buy.
1
Landscape or square
Landscape gives a panorama the most room: ours is 29.7 × 21 cm. Square (21 × 21 cm) treats portrait and landscape photos alike and takes our 524 illustrated covers. Popsa and Polarsteps print layflat in landscape only.
2
How many pages you need
Layflat pages are thick, so the books are shorter: ours run from 18 to 120 pages, Photobox's to 160, Journi's to 103 and Popsa's to 80. A week away usually fills 40 to 60 pages of your best shots.
3
The paper's finish
Heavier is not always better. Our 190gsm lustre has a soft sheen that keeps reflections off an open spread; Journi's 380gsm satin and Photobox's 270gsm are thicker and stiffer to turn.
4
The cover
A layflat is a book you keep out, so the cover matters. On a square TripMemo layflat it can be drawn for where you went, from Italy to Japan; on the landscape book, put your best photo on the front.
5
The price with delivery
Compare what you will pay in total. Ours starts at £41.99 for 18 pages, plus £19 UK delivery; some makers charge less to start or less to send, so add the two before you choose.
6
A proof of every spread
A photo that crosses the middle of a layflat stays whole, but faces right on the centre line still look odd. Check every spread in the studio and download a PDF proof before you order.
Five photo cover styles take your best shot of the trip: Image runs it edge to edge, Editorial sets it beside your title, and Poster, Arch and Good days frame it in their own way. Every style prints your title on the spine.
Book prices before delivery, which is priced for your address at checkout.
The other layflat photo books
What each maker's layflat does well, and where ours differs.
Photobox layflat
Photobox sells layflat on its large and XL books, on heavy 270gsm pages, from 24 up to 160 pages. Its large square layflat (21 × 21 cm) is £47.79 for 24 pages, and its delivery starts at £4.99, so a short book costs less delivered than ours. It also sells a small 14 × 14 cm softcover with layflat pages, from £18.99.
What it lacks for a trip is a cover for the place: you start from a travel theme or your own photo, and nothing is built from your trip. See our Photobox comparison.
Choose Photobox if the lowest price for a small hardcover matters most, or you want a size we don't make, from 10 × 10 cm up to 39 × 29 cm.
Journi layflat
Journi’s layflat is the heaviest we found: 380gsm satin pages, up to 103 pages, in three sizes (21 cm square, 30 cm square and 30 × 21 cm landscape), from £49.99. Its AI drafts the book from your photos with maps and dates, on iPhone, Android or a computer.
Its covers are themes and passport stamps rather than artwork for your destination, and the cheapest layflat costs more than ours to start.
Choose Journi if you want an AI-drafted book with maps on an Android phone, or more than 298 pages (it goes to 349).
Popsa layflat
Popsa offers layflat as an upgrade on its landscape hardcovers, from £16 on the medium 20 × 15 cm book to £26 on the extra large, up to 80 pages. With the upgrade, a medium book is £54 for 20 pages.
It has no square or portrait layflat, which means no square illustrated covers, and its pages are 200gsm matte, with gloss as an extra.
Choose Popsa if you want a book made on your phone in a few minutes, or a big 30 cm square book.
Mixbook layflat
Mixbook’s layflat comes in 8.5 × 8.5, 10 × 10 and 11 × 8.5 in, under 100 pages, on its Signature matte paper. In its UK store the 8.5 × 8.5 in layflat is £56.99 for 20 pages.
You design every page yourself from its themes, which suits a designer more than someone home from a trip with a camera roll to sort.
Choose Mixbook if your book needs more than 298 pages (it goes to 399), or you want to design every page from a big library of themes.
Polarsteps layflat
Polarsteps prints its Travel Book as a Lay-Flat Premium edition of up to 120 pages, in its one landscape size, 29.7 × 21 cm. It is built from the route and photos you tracked in the Polarsteps app, and priced by page count at checkout.
If you didn’t track the trip in Polarsteps, there is no book to print. Ours can be made from any trip’s photos, in landscape or square.
Choose Polarsteps if you tracked the whole trip in Polarsteps and want one landscape book of it, up to 400 pages.
How we compared
We make TripMemo, so we have an interest: read this page with that in mind. To keep it fair, every figure for another maker comes from that maker’s own website or help centre, read on the day shown, and every TripMemo figure comes from our studio and our live prices. Prices are list prices before delivery and before any sale running that day. Most of these makers run frequent promotions, so check the price on the day you order.
We judged the books on what matters for a trip: a cover that says where you went, how much of the trip fits, how the book is made from your photos, paper and binding, and the price of a comparable book. We recheck every figure at least every 90 days. Spotted something out of date? Email support@tripmemo.app and we will correct it.

Layflat photo book questions
What is the best layflat photo book?
For a trip, we think the TripMemo layflat: it starts at £41.99 for a 21 × 21 cm square book, the lowest starting price of the hardcover layflats we checked, it takes a cover drawn for your destination, and it opens completely flat on 190gsm lustre paper. Photobox's is the choice for heavier 270gsm pages or more than 120 pages, and Journi's for the thickest, 380gsm satin pages.
What is a layflat photo book?
A photo book whose pages open completely flat, with no curve into the spine. A photo can run across both pages of a spread without losing its middle to the fold, which is why layflat is the choice for panoramas, landscapes and wedding photos.
Is a layflat photo book worth it?
If your best photos are wide, yes: a panorama across a flat spread is the reason to choose it. If most of your photos are portraits and close-ups, a hardcover shows them just as well, holds more pages and usually costs less.
What is the difference between layflat and hardcover?
A hardcover's pages curve gently into the spine, like a classic book, and a TripMemo hardcover holds up to 298 pages on 200gsm gloss. A layflat's pages open completely flat, so a photo can cross both pages, but they are thicker, so it holds fewer: up to 120, about 24 mm of spine at 100 pages against 13 mm for a hardcover.
How many pages can a layflat photo book have?
It depends on the maker. TripMemo and Polarsteps go to 120, Photobox to 160, Journi to 103, Mixbook under 100 and Popsa to 80. TripMemo's layflat starts at 18 pages, so a short trip makes a complete book.
Can I put an illustrated cover on a layflat photo book?
Yes, on the square TripMemo layflat (21 × 21 cm): all 524 illustrated covers print square. The landscape layflat takes a photo cover instead, such as Image, Editorial, Poster or Arch.
How much is delivery on a TripMemo layflat?
£19 to a UK address, more than our hardcover and softcover delivery. It is shown with the full price at checkout, before you pay.
Do I need the TripMemo app to make a photo book?
No. You can make the whole book here on the web, in any browser, and order it there. The iPhone app is the other way in: if you kept your trip in TripMemo, it builds the book from your days, notes and route for you.
How long does a TripMemo photo book take to arrive?
Every book is printed to order and sent tracked. UK orders usually arrive in 5 to 8 working days, and we ship worldwide: your delivery price and date are shown at checkout, before you pay.
