    Almost every NYC photo book starts in Manhattan, and the covers follow. The skyline and bridge design is the walk across the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset, with the Empire State and Chrysler buildings lined up behind; the taxi is every ride up Fifth Avenue; the Big Apple, with the skyline reflected in its skin, is the nickname made literal.

    Several covers are given to the Statue of Liberty, because the ferry out to Liberty Island is the part of a New York trip people photograph most. One shows the whole figure, one stands her on her pedestal, and one comes in close on the torch and crown. The martini and cosmopolitan covers are for the evenings: rooftop bars, jazz in the Village, a Broadway show and a late dinner after it.

    Brooklyn, Queens and the rest belong in the book too. A NYC trip that spends a day in Williamsburg or DUMBO still suits any of these titles, since they all say New York.

    Beyond the five boroughs

    Because the cover title is New York rather than NYC, the same designs work for a trip that leaves the city: a train up the Hudson Valley, a long weekend in the Catskills, summer on Long Island or a drive to Niagara Falls. Change the title if you want it to say something more particular, such as the name of a wedding or the year you moved there.

City trips are dense, so the inside of a New York book does a lot of the work. Day pages open each day with its date, which helps when Tuesday was the Met and Central Park and Wednesday was the High Line, Chelsea Market and a show. The route map at the front draws a map of where you went, and you can lay out one to four photos per page, with captions for the deli order you want to remember and notes for the bits that did not fit in a photo.

Holiday seasons are a big reason people print a New York book: the tree at Rockefeller Center, the windows on Fifth Avenue, skating in the park.
