Lisbon is built on hills, and a few days there are spent going up and down them. The tram squeals round a corner in Alfama with inches to spare, a funicular hauls you up to Bairro Alto, and every climb ends at a miradouro with the red roofs and the wide river below. Every cover here is drawn for Lisbon itself, and they split two ways. The tram is the city in motion, the picture you take from the pavement as it swings past. The sardines are the city at the table and in the shops: tins in rows behind glass, ceramic fish on the walls, and in June the smell of sardines grilling on every street corner during the festivals. The upright sardine on deep blue looks most like a real tile panel, the one swimming across turquoise is the summer cover, and the leaping one, painted with pink and green flowers as well as blue, is the gentlest.
Alfama and the castle
Alfama is the oldest quarter, a tangle of stairways and alleys below the walls of São Jorge Castle. Washing hangs across the lanes, the Sé cathedral sits on the tram line, and the Miradouro de Santa Luzia and the Portas do Sol look out over the roofs to the river. At night the small fado houses open their doors, and on the night of 12 June, the eve of Santo António, the neighbourhood fills with music, paper garlands and grills.
Baixa and Chiado
The Baixa is the flat grid rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755, running from Rossio down to the triumphal arch on Rua Augusta and out onto Praça do Comércio and the river. The Santa Justa Lift climbs from here to Chiado, the elegant quarter of old cafés and bookshops, where a bronze Fernando Pessoa sits at a table outside A Brasileira.
Bairro Alto and Príncipe Real
The Bica funicular climbs one of the city's most photographed streets to Bairro Alto, quiet by day and packed with people drinking in the street at night. The Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara looks across to the castle, and beyond it Príncipe Real has its garden square, concept stores and grand painted houses.
Belém
Belém, west along the river, is the Lisbon of the age of discoveries: the carved stone cloisters of the Jerónimos Monastery, the Tower of Belém at the water's edge, and the Monument to the Discoveries with its line of navigators. Most people queue for the custard tarts at Pastéis de Belém, then walk on to the curved white roof of the MAAT beside the river.
Graça and the eastern hills
Above Alfama, Graça has the city's widest views from the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte and the terrace by the Graça church, both best at sunset. Further east, the National Tile Museum fills a former convent with five centuries of azulejos, and is the place to see the real tiles behind the sardine covers.

Is the tram on the cover Tram 28?
