A Maldives holiday is often the trip of a lifetime: a honeymoon, a big anniversary, the one you saved for. It starts with the view from the seaplane window, the atolls laid out below like rings of turquoise, then a jetty, a wooden villa on stilts and a ladder straight down into the lagoon. The days that follow are snorkelling the house reef, a sandbank picnic, a sunset cruise with dolphins off the bow, and a lot of photos of water in shades of blue you did not know existed.

Where in the Maldives?

Arriving: Malé and the transfer
Almost every trip lands at Velana International Airport, on its own island beside the capital, Malé. From the arrivals hall your resort's team walks you to a speedboat for the closer atolls, a seaplane for the further ones, or a short domestic flight and a boat. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so a late arrival can mean a night near the airport first.
The transfer is worth its own pages: the view of the reefs from the seaplane, the landing on the lagoon, the welcome drink on the jetty. If you have a few hours in Malé, it is a small, busy city of colourful buildings, with a fish market and the old coral stone Friday Mosque.
Resort islands and water villas
Most resorts sit on an island of their own, so the island becomes the whole world of the book: the jetty, the beach path, the spa, the restaurant on stilts. Overwater villas stand in the lagoon with a deck, steps into the water and sometimes a glass panel in the floor; beach villas open straight onto the sand. Some resorts have an underwater restaurant or a floating breakfast served in your own pool.

House reefs, mantas and whale sharks
Under the surface is half the reason to go. Many resorts have a house reef a few strokes from the beach, with reef fish, turtles and young blacktip reef sharks in the shallows. Further out, boat trips take snorkellers and divers to manta cleaning stations and channels. In Baa Atoll, Hanifaru Bay draws mantas to feed in the plankton-rich months of the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, and South Ari Atoll is known for whale sharks.

Sandbanks and sunset cruises
A sandbank picnic is a strip of white sand with nothing on it but a parasol, a cool box and the two of you, until the boat comes back. Back on the island, dinner may be a table on the sand under the stars.

Guesthouses on inhabited islands such as Maafushi offer another side of the Maldives: a village, a mosque, a school, fishermen at the harbour and short eats at a café. The Maldives is a Muslim country, so on local islands visitors dress modestly away from the designated bikini beach, and alcohol is served only at resorts, a few licensed hotels and liveaboard boats. Many trips combine a few nights on a local island with a stay at a resort.
