Start your Tokyo book

Tokyo is a city of a hundred small worlds stitched together by the Yamanote line. One morning is incense and lanterns in Asakusa, the afternoon is the crowd at the Shibuya scramble, and the night ends on a stool in a Shinjuku alley no wider than your arms. A few days in and the camera roll holds ramen, vending machines, a shrine gate, a rooftop view and a thousand pedestrians all at once.

A book sorts it back into days and neighbourhoods. The covers pick the city's quieter symbols, the ones you will have stopped for between trains: a red torii with falling petals, a pagoda, a koi in a garden pond, a cherry branch and a fan painted with sakura. Each reads Tokyo in large letters, with the year beneath.

  • Sakura fan

    Tokyo

An open folding fan with dark ribs, its cream and red leaf painted with a blossoming cherry branch, on bright red, for a Tokyo trip with a sense of occasion, such as a night at the kabuki or an anniversary.

    Start with this cover
  • Torii gate and petals

    Tokyo

A red torii with a dark grey top beam and feet, three pale cherry petals falling beside it, on pink, for a trip that climbed the steps of Tokyo's shrines.

  • Pagoda

    Tokyo

A three-tiered red and cream pagoda with slate roofs and a golden spire on coral pink, also drawn taller in red and navy on sky blue, for a Tokyo trip with its temples at the heart of it.

    Asakusa and Ueno

Old Tokyo sits on the east side of the city. In Asakusa you walk under the great red lantern of the Kaminarimon, along the snack stalls of Nakamise-dori to Senso-ji and its five-storey pagoda, with the Skytree rising across the Sumida River. Ueno, a few stops away, has the museums, the Ameyoko market under the railway and the park that fills with blossom picnics in spring.

Both pagoda covers suit this side of the city, and the cherry branch belongs to Ueno in late March.

  • Tokyo illustrated travel photo book cover with the sakura fan artwork

    Shibuya and Harajuku

The scramble crossing seen from above, Hachiko waiting outside the station, the city laid out from the Shibuya Sky deck at sunset. Walk north and the crowds of Takeshita Street give way to the forest path and huge wooden gates of Meiji Jingu, then the polished shopfronts of Omotesando.

The torii cover, with petals falling past a red gate, is the calm counterpoint to all that neon.

  • Tokyo illustrated travel photo book cover with the sakura fan artwork

    Shinjuku and the west

Shinjuku is two cities in one. By night it is the yakitori smoke of Omoide Yokocho and the tiny bars of Golden Gai; by day it is the lawns and ponds of Shinjuku Gyoen. Further west, Shimokitazawa is vintage shops and coffee, and Gotokuji temple is filled with rows of white beckoning cats.

The koi cover suits the garden side of the city, and the sakura fan the night out.

  • Tokyo illustrated travel photo book cover with the sakura fan artwork

    Yanaka and the old lanes

Yanaka came through the 1923 earthquake and the wartime bombing better than most of Tokyo, so its lanes still have wooden houses, small temples and the shopping street of Yanaka Ginza with its sunset steps. Nearby, the corridor of red torii at Nezu Shrine is busiest in the spring azalea season.

The torii and koi covers suit a slower book of back streets and gardens.

    Days out from Tokyo

Many Tokyo trips have a day away by train: the Great Buddha and the coast at Kamakura, the gilded shrines of Nikko, or Lake Kawaguchiko for a clear view of Mount Fuji. These pages sit happily in a Tokyo book, and any of the covers can carry the city's name over the whole trip.

Ideas

Tokyo photo book ideas

A Tokyo trip is usually planned by neighbourhood, a different corner of the city each day with a day trip somewhere in the middle. Here is how to turn that rhythm into chapters, with the blossom, the autumn ginkgo or the winter view of Fuji wherever your dates fell.

Build it chapter by chapter

Follow the route you took and let each stop be its own chapter. Turn on day pages and every day opens with a page you can title, so the book reads in the order you lived it.

  1. Arriving in Shinjuku

The lanterns and smoke of Omoide Yokocho, the narrow doors of Golden Gai, the city from a tower window on your first night, and the ponds of Shinjuku Gyoen the morning after.

  2. Asakusa and the river

The Kaminarimon lantern early before the crowds, the five-storey pagoda at Senso-ji, the Skytree across the Sumida, and plastic food in the shop windows of Kappabashi.

  3. Shibuya and Harajuku

The scramble crossing from above as the lights change, the giant wooden torii at Meiji Jingu, the crowds of Takeshita Street and the city at sunset from Shibuya Sky.

  4. Old Tokyo

Cats and wooden houses in the lanes of Yanaka, the red torii corridor at Nezu Shrine, and blossom or boats on Ueno's Shinobazu Pond.

  5. Markets and gardens

Breakfast at the Tsukiji Outer Market, the stepping stones and carp at Kiyosumi Gardens, and the bridges and moats around the Imperial Palace.

  6. A day out

The Great Buddha at Kamakura and the little Enoden train along the coast, or Mount Fuji across Lake Kawaguchiko on a clear morning.

The little things

The landmarks take care of themselves. These are the photos you’ll be glad you took.

  • Your Suica card and a ticket gate
  • Ramen bought from a ticket machine
  • A row of capsule toy machines
  • Lanterns along the Meguro River
  • Konbini egg sandwiches
  • Goshuin stamps from temples and shrines
  • The beckoning cats of Gotokuji
  • A train platform melody you still hum

How to make your Tokyo photo book

Make it here on the web or in the TripMemo app on iPhone. Your book is saved as you go.

Start your Tokyo book
  1. Choose a cover

Pick one of the 5 Tokyo covers, change its title, or put your own photo on the front.

  2. Add your photos

They’re laid out for you, page by page. The TripMemo app also sorts your trip by day and place. Then move, crop and caption anything.

  3. Check it and order

See every page as it will print and download a proof. It’s printed when you order and sent tracked, in about 5 to 8 working days in the UK.

Make it yours

Tokyo days are long and crowded, so let day pages open each one with its neighbourhoods in the title: Asakusa and Ueno, Shibuya and Harajuku. Captions are where you keep the name of the ramen counter with eight seats, the station exit you finally worked out, and the shrine where you collected a goshuin stamp. A note or two can hold what a photo cannot, like the sound of the crossing when the lights change.

Night photos of neon and lantern-lit alleys look striking in print, and they are worth a full page each. A square or layflat book gives a skyline from a tower deck room to spread across both pages.

Tokyo photo book questions

Which Tokyo cover suits a sakura trip?

The cherry blossom branch is the most direct, and the fan painted with sakura is a bolder version. The torii cover has petals falling beside the gate, so it suits a spring trip that spent as much time at shrines as under the trees.

Is there a cover for Shibuya, Shinjuku or Asakusa?

Every design reads Tokyo, but the title is yours to change, so any cover can say the neighbourhood you stayed in. The pagoda covers sit naturally with Asakusa and the koi with a garden-filled trip.

Can I include day trips to Mount Fuji, Kamakura or Nikko?

Yes. Day pages open each day of the trip, so a day at Lake Kawaguchiko or Kamakura reads as its own chapter inside your Tokyo book.

We went to Tokyo and Kyoto. Which cover should we choose?

If Tokyo was most of the trip, a Tokyo cover works, and you can retitle it Japan or Tokyo to Kyoto. Kyoto and Japan have their own covers too, on the Japan photo books page, if the trip went further.

Which cover suits an autumn or winter trip?

The koi and the pagodas have nothing seasonal in them, so they suit November ginkgo or a clear January day with Fuji on the skyline as well as spring. The pagoda on sky blue is the coolest in colour.

Can I make my Tokyo photo book on my phone?

Yes. Make it on the web here or in the TripMemo app on iPhone, which sorts your trip photos by day and place, handy when every day was a different neighbourhood.

Can I put my own photo of Shibuya at night on the cover?

Yes. The photo styles, such as Image, Poster and Editorial, put a picture of your own on the front, so the crossing, Tokyo Tower or a neon alley can open the book.

How much does a Tokyo photo book cost?

A Tokyo photo book starts at £26.49 for a softcover, £28.49 for a hardcover and £41.99 for a layflat, before delivery. The price grows with the pages you add, and you see the exact total, with delivery to your address, before you pay. UK orders usually arrive in 5 to 8 working days, and we ship worldwide.

How many photos do I need for a Tokyo photo book?

A short break usually gives 60 to 120 photos worth printing, which fill 24 to 40 pages. A week gives 150 to 250 photos for 40 to 80 pages, and two weeks or more 250 to 400 photos for 80 to 150 pages. Your photos are laid out for you, two to a page by default, and you can change it to one to four.
