  • 6 illustrated covers drawn for Texas

Start your Texas book

Texas is big enough that a trip there is mostly driving, and the camera roll shows it: long straight roads, a petrol station the size of a supermarket, a brisket tray on butcher paper, the Alamo smaller than you expected and a sky that goes on for ever. Then there are the evenings, a two-step in a dance hall or a band on Sixth Street. A photo book is where the miles turn back into a story.

Nearly every cover here is a pair of cowboy boots, because nothing else says Texas so quickly. They come with stars and flame stitching in bright red, under a cream hat on burnt orange or cream, in hot pink with a bandana for a girls' trip, and in blush with a bow. Austin has its own: a single boot in a clump of bluebonnets with a guitar pick at its heel.

Where in Texas?

The cities, coasts and corners the Texas covers are drawn for. Pick the place your trip was about, or keep the whole country on the front.

  • Austin illustrated Texas travel photo book cover with a cowboy boot with Texas bluebonnets and a guitar pick on coral

    Austin

    Boot & bluebonnets

Austin calls itself the Live Music Capital of the World, and the photos follow: bands on Sixth Street and Red River, the pink granite dome of the Capitol, a swim in the cold spring water of Barton Springs, and the bats pouring out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk in summer. Its cover puts a boot among bluebonnets, the state flower, with a guitar pick shaped with Texas at its heel.

  • Texas illustrated travel photo book cover with a pair of red cowboy boots with white stars on red

    The Hill Country

West of Austin the Hill Country is limestone rivers, peach stands and German towns: Fredericksburg's main street and wineries, the bare pink dome of Enchanted Rock, the dance hall at Luckenbach, and the brisket pits of Lockhart. In spring the roadsides turn blue with bluebonnets, which is when most people pull over for the photo. Any boots cover suits it, and the Austin cover's bluebonnets fit best.

  • Texas illustrated travel photo book cover with a pair of red cowboy boots with white stars on red

    San Antonio

San Antonio is the Alamo, the shaded River Walk below street level and the chain of old Spanish missions, Mission San José above all, that are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is no San Antonio cover by name; the burnt orange boots and hat, retitled, look right over a chapter of mission walls and Tex-Mex.

  • Texas illustrated travel photo book cover with a pair of red cowboy boots with white stars on red

    Dallas and Fort Worth

Fort Worth still feels like a cattle town at the Stockyards, where a small herd of longhorns is walked down Exchange Avenue twice a day and the rodeo runs at Cowtown Coliseum. Dallas brings Dealey Plaza and the Sixth Floor Museum, and a skyline lit up at night. The red boots were made for a Stockyards weekend.

  • Texas illustrated travel photo book cover with a pair of red cowboy boots with white stars on red

    Houston and the Gulf

Houston's big photo is Space Center Houston, home of Mission Control and a Saturn V laid out on its side, and an hour south the Gulf opens up at Galveston, with its Victorian houses and the Pleasure Pier on the seawall. Any Texas cover can be retitled for a Houston chapter.

  • Texas illustrated travel photo book cover with a pair of red cowboy boots with white stars on red

    West Texas and Big Bend

Far west, Texas turns into desert and mountains: the cliffs of Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, star-filled skies, the art town of Marfa and the lonely Prada Marfa installation by the highway near Valentine. These pages suit the plainest of the covers, the tan boots, so the landscapes do the talking.

Ideas

Texas photo book ideas

Most visitors see Texas as a road trip around the triangle of Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, with Austin and the Hill Country between them and West Texas for those with more time. Here is how to give each stretch of road its own chapter.

Build it chapter by chapter

Follow the route you took and let each stop be its own chapter. Turn on day pages and every day opens with a page you can title, so the book reads in the order you lived it.

  1. Dallas and Fort Worth

The longhorn cattle drive on Exchange Avenue in the Fort Worth Stockyards, the rodeo at Cowtown Coliseum, Dealey Plaza in Dallas, and the skyline from the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge at dusk.

  2. Austin

The Capitol at the top of Congress Avenue, the bats leaving the Congress Avenue Bridge at sunset, a band on Sixth Street, the 'I love you so much' mural on South Congress, and Barton Springs on a hot afternoon.

Austin illustrated Texas travel photo book cover with a cowboy boot with Texas bluebonnets and a guitar pick on coral
  3. The Hill Country

Bluebonnets along the roadside in spring, the dance hall and general store at Luckenbach, a winery terrace near Fredericksburg, the view from the top of Enchanted Rock, and brisket on butcher paper in Lockhart.

  4. San Antonio

The front of the Alamo, the River Walk from a riverboat as the lights come on, the stone church of Mission San José, and the colourful stalls of Historic Market Square.

  5. Houston and Galveston

Mission Control and the Saturn V at Space Center Houston, the Victorian houses of Galveston, and the Pleasure Pier rides over the Gulf.

  6. Big Bend and Marfa

Santa Elena Canyon's walls rising from the Rio Grande, the Chisos Mountains at sunset, the Milky Way over the desert, and Prada Marfa alone beside the highway.

How to make your Texas photo book

Make it here on the web or in the TripMemo app on iPhone. Your book is saved as you go.

Start your Texas book
  1. Choose a cover

Pick one of the 6 Texas covers, change its title, or put your own photo on the front.

  2. Add your photos

They’re laid out for you, page by page. The TripMemo app also sorts your trip by day and place. Then move, crop and caption anything.

  3. Check it and order

See every page as it will print and download a proof. It’s printed when you order and sent tracked, in about 5 to 8 working days in the UK.

Make it yours

A Texas trip covers serious distance, so the route map is worth switching on: the book opens with the whole drive, from Dallas to Austin, out through the Hill Country and down to San Antonio. Day pages mark each day, which keeps a night of honky-tonks apart from the morning queue for barbecue.

Caption the barbecue joints by name, because you will argue later about which brisket was best, and write a note for the dance hall where a stranger taught you the two-step. The cover title and year can be changed, so a bachelorette book on the hot pink boots can say Austin, or the name of the bride.

Hardcover, softcover or layflat

The same Texas cover on all three books. Choose the one that suits your trip.

Texas photo book questions

Is there a Texas cover for a bachelorette weekend?

Yes. The hot pink boots with a bandana-tied hat and the blush boots with a bow both suit a bachelorette or girls' trip. You can change the title to Austin, or to the bride's name, and set the year yourself.

Which cover suits a spring trip to see the bluebonnets?

The Austin cover shows a cowboy boot standing among bluebonnets, the Texas state flower. Retitle it Texas or Hill Country if the trip went beyond the city.

Is there a cover for San Antonio, Houston or Dallas?

There is no cover named for them, but every cover can be retitled. The boots designs work for any Texas city, and you can put your own photo of the Alamo or the skyline on the front instead.

Can I put a whole Texas road trip in one book?

Yes. A route map at the front draws the drive, and day pages open each day, so a loop from Dallas to Austin, San Antonio and Houston reads as clear chapters.

Do the boots covers come in different colours?

They do. There are red boots on red, boots and hat on burnt orange or on cream, pink boots on hot pink, blush boots with a bow, and tan boots on tan.

Can I make my Texas photo book on my phone?

Yes. Make it in the TripMemo app on iPhone, which sorts your trip photos by day and place, or on the web at tripmemo.app.

How much does a Texas photo book cost?

A Texas photo book starts at £26.49 for a softcover, £28.49 for a hardcover and £41.99 for a layflat, before delivery. The price grows with the pages you add, and you see the exact total, with delivery to your address, before you pay. UK orders usually arrive in 5 to 8 working days, and we ship worldwide.

How many photos do I need for a Texas photo book?

A short break usually gives 60 to 120 photos worth printing, which fill 24 to 40 pages. A week gives 150 to 250 photos for 40 to 80 pages, and two weeks or more 250 to 400 photos for 80 to 150 pages. Your photos are laid out for you, two to a page by default, and you can change it to one to four.
