Make a photo book of your North Carolina trip
- 7 illustrated covers drawn for North Carolina
- Hardcover, softcover or layflat, in three sizes
- Made on the web or in the app, printed when you order
North Carolina is two very different trips joined by a long road. On the coast, the Outer Banks are a thin line of sand between the Atlantic and the sounds, with striped lighthouses, wild horses on the beach and the dunes where the Wright brothers first flew. In the west, the Blue Ridge Parkway winds through the mountains past Asheville to the Great Smokies, where the views go blue at dusk and the bears are real. Many people do one each year; a few do both in one go. Either way, the photos deserve better than a camera roll.
The covers are drawn for both halves. Three are lighthouses in black, white and blue stripes, and one is a wild horse with a windblown mane. For the mountains there is a misty Blue Ridge view with pink rhododendron, and a black bear. A dogwood branch, the state flower, suits a spring trip anywhere in the state.

Where in North Carolina?
The cities, coasts and corners the North Carolina covers are drawn for. Pick the place your trip was about, or keep the whole country on the front.

The Outer Banks
The Outer Banks run for miles along the coast, and every stretch has its own lighthouse: unpainted red brick at Currituck, black and white bands at Bodie Island, and the black and white spiral of Cape Hatteras, the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, moved back from the sea in 1999. Add the hang gliders on the great dunes of Jockey's Ridge, the Wright Brothers memorial at Kill Devil Hills, and the ferry over to Ocracoke.
Three covers are lighthouses: one on a dune under a bright blue sky, one against a pink sunset, and one that comes in close on a striped tower and its red brick base. North of Corolla, wild horses roam the beaches, and the wild horse cover is for the day you found them.

The southern coast
Further south, the Crystal Coast around Beaufort has its own wild horses on Shackleford Banks and the diamond-patterned lighthouse at Cape Lookout, while Wilmington has a riverfront with the Battleship North Carolina moored across the water, and Wrightsville Beach close by. The wild horse and lighthouse covers suit these pages as well as the Outer Banks.

Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a slow road of overlooks: the Linn Cove Viaduct curving around Grandfather Mountain, the Mile High Swinging Bridge, Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi, and the rhododendron at Craggy Gardens in early summer. Asheville sits in the middle, with the vast Biltmore Estate and a brewery on most corners. The Blue Ridge cover, mist in the valleys and rhododendron in the foreground, was drawn for this chapter.

The Great Smoky Mountains
The North Carolina side of the Smokies starts at Cherokee, where elk graze in the fields by the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and the road climbs over Newfound Gap into Tennessee. Black bears live throughout the park, and the black bear cover is for the trip where you saw one, from the car, at a safe distance.

Charlotte and the Triangle
Charlotte, and Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill in the Triangle, are often where a trip begins: a flight in, a basketball game, a plate of chopped barbecue with vinegar sauce. There is no city cover, but every North Carolina cover can carry a city's name instead, and the dogwood suits a spring visit.
North Carolina photo book ideas
I-40 runs right across North Carolina, from the beaches near Wilmington to the Smokies, and the best trips use it as a spine: a week at the coast, then a few days on the Blue Ridge. Here is how to turn that into chapters, coast first.
Build it chapter by chapter
Follow the route you took and let each stop be its own chapter. Turn on day pages and every day opens with a page you can title, so the book reads in the order you lived it.
The northern Outer Banks
Wild horses on the beach north of Corolla, the red brick Currituck lighthouse, kites and hang gliders over Jockey's Ridge, and the Wright Brothers monument on Kill Devil Hill.
Hatteras and Ocracoke
Cape Hatteras lighthouse from the beach, the striped tower at Bodie Island across the marsh, the ferry wake on the way to Ocracoke, and the sun going down over the sound.
The Crystal Coast and Wilmington
Wild horses on Shackleford Banks from the boat, the diamond-patterned lighthouse at Cape Lookout, Beaufort's waterfront, and the Battleship North Carolina across the river from Wilmington.
Asheville and the Parkway
The Linn Cove Viaduct curving round Grandfather Mountain, the Mile High Swinging Bridge, Looking Glass Rock from its overlook, and the front of the Biltmore house.
The Smokies
Elk in the fields at Oconaluftee, layered ridges from Newfound Gap, a black bear from a safe distance, and autumn colour on the mountains in October.
The little things
The landmarks take care of themselves. These are the photos you’ll be glad you took.
- Sea oats on the dunes
- The beach house on its stilts
- A lighthouse climb ticket
- A dogwood in flower
- Eastern-style barbecue
- A Krispy Kreme straight from the line
- Mileposts on the Parkway
- Ferry boarding at Hatteras

Make it yours
An Outer Banks week is a book of its own: the beach house, the same stretch of sand at different times of day, a lighthouse climb, a crab feast. Day pages give each day its own opening, and a caption under each photo keeps track of which beach access it was. If the trip went coast to mountains, switch on the route map and the book opens with the whole drive.
Write down the names of the overlooks, because the Parkway's views look alike on a phone and quite different in print. The cover title and year are yours to change: a family that rents the same beach house every summer can put its name on the front, one book a year.
Hardcover, softcover or layflat
The same North Carolina cover on all three books. Choose the one that suits your trip.

North Carolina photo book questions
Is there an Outer Banks or Cape Hatteras cover?
Yes. Three North Carolina covers show black and white or blue and white spiral-striped lighthouses: one on a dune with sea oats, one at sunset, and one close up on a striped tower with a red brick base like Cape Hatteras. You can change the title to Outer Banks or OBX.
Is there a cover with the wild horses?
Yes. The wild horse cover shows a chestnut horse with a windblown mane on peach, for the Corolla horses, the Ocracoke ponies or the herd on Shackleford Banks.
Which cover suits a Blue Ridge Parkway or Asheville trip?
The Blue Ridge cover shows misty layered ridges, firs, pink rhododendron and a low yellow sun. The black bear suits a trip that went on into the Smokies. Both can be retitled Asheville or Blue Ridge.
Can one book cover the Smokies on both the North Carolina and Tennessee sides?
Yes. Day pages mark each day, so crossing Newfound Gap into Gatlinburg simply becomes the next chapter. Keep a North Carolina cover, or retitle it Smoky Mountains.
We go to the same beach every year. Can each year have its own book?
Yes. Every cover carries the year under the title, and the title is yours to change, so you can keep the same design each summer and build a shelf of beach weeks.
Can I make my North Carolina photo book on my phone?
Yes. Make it in the TripMemo app on iPhone, which sorts your trip photos by day and place, or on the web at tripmemo.app.
How much does a North Carolina photo book cost?
A North Carolina photo book starts at £26.49 for a softcover, £28.49 for a hardcover and £41.99 for a layflat, before delivery. The price grows with the pages you add, and you see the exact total, with delivery to your address, before you pay. UK orders usually arrive in 5 to 8 working days, and we ship worldwide.
How many photos do I need for a North Carolina photo book?
A short break usually gives 60 to 120 photos worth printing, which fill 24 to 40 pages. A week gives 150 to 250 photos for 40 to 80 pages, and two weeks or more 250 to 400 photos for 80 to 150 pages. Your photos are laid out for you, two to a page by default, and you can change it to one to four.
