Start your Alaska book

An Alaska trip is often a once-in-a-lifetime one, and it comes home as thousands of photos of things that were very far away: a whale's tail a few hundred metres off the bow, a glacier calving into the fjord, a bear on the riverbank, Denali on the one clear morning. Some are blurry, some are perfect, and together they are the trip. A book is the place to keep the good ones in the order you saw them.

The Alaska covers are drawn for its wildlife and its coast: a humpback's tail rising from a fjord below snowy mountains and a coral sun, a brown bear carrying a salmon, a bull moose standing in snow, and a whale's tail filled with a whole scene of glacier, ice, orca and kelp. They suit an Inside Passage cruise, a land tour to Denali, or a cruisetour that did both.

Where in Alaska?

The cities, coasts and corners the Alaska covers are drawn for. Pick the place your trip was about, or keep the whole country on the front.

    The Inside Passage

Most cruises follow the sheltered channels of the south-east between forested islands. Ketchikan has the totem poles and the boardwalk of Creek Street; Juneau has the Mendenhall Glacier with Nugget Falls beside it and some of the best humpback whale watching in the state; Skagway has the gold rush storefronts and the White Pass and Yukon Route railway climbing to the summit. Scenic cruising days in Glacier Bay, Tracy Arm or at Hubbard Glacier fill the rest. The two whale covers were drawn for this chapter.

    Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula

From Anchorage the Seward Highway follows Turnagain Arm, where Dall sheep stand on the cliffs above the road, to Seward and the boat trips into Kenai Fjords National Park for glaciers, sea otters, puffins and whales. Whittier is reached through a single-lane tunnel shared with the train, and Homer sits at the end of the road on its long spit. Moose wander through Anchorage itself, so the moose cover suits this chapter as much as the interior.

    Denali

Denali National Park is reached by the Alaska Railroad or by road from Anchorage, often with a night in Talkeetna for the view of the mountain across the river. Inside the park, buses run along the single park road through the tundra in search of grizzlies, caribou, Dall sheep and moose, and the mountain itself is hidden by cloud on many days. The moose and the bear covers both belong to a Denali book.

    Bear country

The famous bear photos come from Katmai National Park, where brown bears stand at the lip of Brooks Falls in July waiting for salmon to jump, and from day trips by floatplane to Lake Clark and the coast. The bear and salmon cover is made for exactly that day.

    Fairbanks and the far north

Fairbanks is the base for the northern lights from late August to April, for the hot springs out at Chena, and in June for the midnight sun. There is no cover for the aurora, so the light blue moose in the snow is the natural choice, or a photo cover style can put your own picture of the green sky on the front.

Ideas

Alaska photo book ideas

Many visitors combine a week's cruise through the Inside Passage with a few days on land, from Anchorage to Denali and Fairbanks. Here is how to turn that into chapters, from the first port to the last view of the mountain.

Build it chapter by chapter

Follow the route you took and let each stop be its own chapter. Turn on day pages and every day opens with a page you can title, so the book reads in the order you lived it.

  1. Ketchikan

The coloured houses on stilts along Creek Street, carved totem poles at Saxman or Totem Bight, and salmon swimming upstream under the boardwalk in late summer.

  2. Juneau

The Mendenhall Glacier with Nugget Falls pouring down beside it, humpbacks feeding on a whale-watching boat, and the city from the top of the Mount Roberts Tramway.

  3. Skagway

The wooden gold rush storefronts on Broadway, and the White Pass and Yukon Route train crossing trestles on its climb to the summit.

  4. Glacier day

The ship nosing up to the ice in Glacier Bay or at Hubbard Glacier, blue ice calving into the water, and everyone on deck in their warmest layers.

  5. Anchorage and Seward

The Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm, a moose by the road, and puffins, sea otters and a tidewater glacier on a Kenai Fjords boat trip.

  6. Denali

The Alaska Railroad's dome car from inside, the mountain from Talkeetna if the clouds clear, and grizzlies and caribou on the tundra from the park bus.

  7. Fairbanks

The aurora over a dark spruce forest, steam rising off the hot springs, or the midnight sun over the river in June.

The landmarks take care of themselves. These are the photos you’ll be glad you took.

Make it here on the web or in the TripMemo app on iPhone. Your book is saved as you go.

Start your Alaska book
  1. Choose a cover

Pick one of the 4 Alaska covers, change its title, or put your own photo on the front.

  2. Add your photos

They’re laid out for you, page by page. The TripMemo app also sorts your trip by day and place. Then move, crop and caption anything.

  3. Check it and order

See every page as it will print and download a proof. It’s printed when you order and sent tracked, in about 5 to 8 working days in the UK.

Make it yours

Alaska trips are long and the distances are huge, so the route map is worth having: it opens the book with the line of the cruise up the coast, or the railway from Anchorage to Denali and Fairbanks. Day pages mark each port and each new lodge, so a book that is half cruise and half land still reads in the right order.

Wildlife photos are the ones to crop with care: bring the bear or the whale close and give it a page of its own. Use captions for the names of the glaciers, the ports and the guide who spotted the wolf, and a note for the sound of the ice cracking that no photo can hold.

Hardcover, softcover or layflat

The same Alaska cover on all three books. Choose the one that suits your trip.

Alaska photo book questions

Which cover suits an Alaska cruise?

The two whale covers were made for cruises: one shows a humpback's tail below snowy mountains and a coral sun, the other a whale's tail filled with a glacier, ice and an orca. Both read Alaska, and you can retitle either with the name of the ship or the route.

Can I put a cruise and a land tour in one book?

Yes. A cruisetour fits one book. Day pages open each day, so the ports and the days at Denali each start their own section, and the route map at the front shows the whole journey from the coast to the interior.

Is there a cover for a bear-watching trip?

Yes. The Alaska bear cover shows a brown bear carrying a red salmon, made for a trip to watch the bears fishing at Katmai, Lake Clark or along the coast.

Is there a Denali or northern lights cover?

Not one titled for them. The moose in the snow suits Denali and a winter trip to Fairbanks, and you can change the title on any Alaska cover. For the aurora, a photo cover style puts your own picture of it on the front.

My cruise also called in Vancouver or Seattle. Can those go in the book?

Yes. Many Alaska cruises start or end in Vancouver or Seattle, and those days sit at the start or end of the book like any other. Keep an Alaska cover, or retitle it to cover the whole voyage.

Can I make my Alaska photo book in the app?

Yes. Make it in the TripMemo app on iPhone, which sorts your trip photos by day and place, a help when a cruise has a new port every day, or on the web at tripmemo.app.

How much does an Alaska photo book cost?

An Alaska photo book starts at £26.49 for a softcover, £28.49 for a hardcover and £41.99 for a layflat, before delivery. The price grows with the pages you add, and you see the exact total, with delivery to your address, before you pay. UK orders usually arrive in 5 to 8 working days, and we ship worldwide.

How many photos do I need for an Alaska photo book?

A short break usually gives 60 to 120 photos worth printing, which fill 24 to 40 pages. A week gives 150 to 250 photos for 40 to 80 pages, and two weeks or more 250 to 400 photos for 80 to 150 pages. Your photos are laid out for you, two to a page by default, and you can change it to one to four.
