    Most Japan trips begin and end in Tokyo, so it often fills half the book. The scramble crossing at Shibuya, the lanterns of Senso-ji in Asakusa, the view from a tower at dusk, the side streets of Shimokitazawa and a day trip to see Mount Fuji, if the clouds allowed it.

    Kyoto is a slower chapter. The orange gates of Fushimi Inari climbing the hill, the bamboo grove at Arashiyama, the Golden Pavilion reflected in its pond, the lantern-lit lanes of Gion at night. Its cover draws three koi circling in a pond, a nod to the gardens you will have walked through. Many visitors add a day in Nara among the bowing deer, and those pages sit happily in the Kyoto chapter.

Japan photo book ideas

Most first trips to Japan follow the bullet train west: Tokyo, a night near Mount Fuji, Kyoto and Osaka, then Hiroshima if there is time. Here is how to turn that line into chapters, with the spring blossom or the autumn leaves wherever you found them.

Build it chapter by chapter

Follow the route you took and let each stop be its own chapter. Turn on day pages and every day opens with a page you can title, so the book reads in the order you lived it.

  1. Tokyo

    The Shibuya scramble from above as the lights change, the giant red lantern at Senso-ji in Asakusa, the lantern-lit alleys of Shinjuku at night, and the whole city from an observation deck at dusk.

  2. Mount Fuji and Hakone

    Fuji rising behind the Chureito Pagoda above Lake Kawaguchiko on a clear morning, the ropeway over the steaming Owakudani valley, the red torii standing in Lake Ashi, and dinner in your yukata at a ryokan.

  3. On the move

    The nose of the Shinkansen gliding into the platform, an ekiben laid out on the tray table, and Fuji from the right-hand window on the way west to Kyoto.

  4. Kyoto and Nara

    The tunnels of torii at Fushimi Inari early before the crowds, the Arashiyama bamboo grove at first light, the Golden Pavilion in its pond, and Gion at dusk. Then the bowing deer of Nara Park and the great Buddha at Todai-ji.

    Dotonbori's neon reflected in the canal at night, takoyaki and okonomiyaki cooked in front of you, and Osaka Castle above its moat.

  6. Hiroshima and Miyajima

    The Atomic Bomb Dome across the river from the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki layered with noodles, and the great torii of Itsukushima Shrine standing in the sea at high tide and again at sunset.

Make it yours

Which cover suits a cherry blossom trip?

Tokyo has a cherry blossom branch and a fan painted with sakura, and the torii cover has petals drifting past. For a spring trip beyond Tokyo, the Japan cherry blossom cover suits the whole country.

Can I put Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka in one book?

Yes. A typical Japan itinerary fits in one book. Day pages open each day so the move from city to city stays clear, and the cover can say Japan or the city you choose.

Is there a cover for Osaka, Hiroshima or Hokkaido?

There is no cover named for them, but you can retitle any design. The torii at sunset, the matcha bowl and the Japan cherry blossom all work with a different place on the front.

My trip was two weeks long. Will everything fit?

Hardcover and softcover books hold up to a few hundred pages and up to four photos a page, so long trips fit comfortably. Layflat holds fewer pages but opens completely flat.
