Make a photo book of your Athens trip
- 4 illustrated covers drawn for Athens
- Hardcover, softcover or layflat, in three sizes
- Made on the web or in the app, printed when you order
Athens is a city you see from below for days before you finally climb up. The Parthenon is there above the rooftops when you sit down to breakfast in Koukaki, behind the crowd in Monastiraki Square, lit gold above the tavernas at night. Then there is the city in between the ruins: the whitewashed lanes of Anafiotika, the flea market, a souvlaki in paper, a freddo espresso in the shade of a plane tree.
Whether it was a long weekend or two nights before the ferry to the islands, a book keeps it together. The covers are drawn from the Acropolis and its museum: the Parthenon in warm marble, Athena in her crested helmet with an owl on it, a whole Ionic column with an olive branch, and the curl of an Ionic capital close up.

Where in Athens?
The cities, coasts and corners the Athens covers are drawn for. Pick the place your trip was about, or keep the whole country on the front.

The Acropolis
The hill is more than the Parthenon. Beside it stands the Erechtheion with its porch of Caryatids, the small Temple of Athena Nike sits above the entrance gateway, and on the southern slope are the Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, still used for summer concerts. At the foot of the hill, the Acropolis Museum keeps five of the six original Caryatids and has glass floors over the excavated streets beneath it.
The Parthenon cover is the obvious choice here. The two Ionic covers belong to the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike, both built in the Ionic order, and the olive branch on the column recalls the olive tree growing beside the Erechtheion today, on the spot where myth says Athena gave the city its first.

Plaka, Anafiotika and Monastiraki
Below the north side of the Acropolis, the old town winds downhill. Anafiotika is a tiny village of whitewashed houses built into the rock by builders from the island of Anafi; Plaka below it is tavernas, neoclassical houses and shops selling sandals. At the bottom, Monastiraki Square has a view straight up to the Parthenon, the flea market spreads into the streets, and Psyrri fills with bars after dark.
The Parthenon cover suits a book that kept coming back to that view, and the column with olives suits the long lunches in between.

The Agora and the museums
The Ancient Agora, the city's old marketplace, has the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved Greek temples anywhere, and the rebuilt Stoa of Attalos, now a museum. Nearby are the Roman Agora and its octagonal Tower of the Winds. Across town, the National Archaeological Museum holds the gold Mask of Agamemnon and the Antikythera mechanism.
Athena in her owl helmet is the cover for a trip spent in these galleries. Her owl is still everywhere in Athens, on souvenirs and on the Greek one euro coin.

Syntagma and Lycabettus
Syntagma Square is the modern centre: the parliament, the Evzones in pleated kilts and pom-pom shoes guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the shady paths of the National Garden behind. A walk east brings you to the all-marble Panathenaic Stadium, home of the first modern Olympics, and up through the cafés of Kolonaki to the funicular that climbs Lycabettus Hill.
Any of the covers suits this side of the city, and the Athena bust is the boldest on a shelf.

The Riviera and days out
The coast road south runs past the beaches of the Athens Riviera and the warm lake at Vouliagmeni to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, which is at its best at sunset. Ferries from Piraeus reach Aegina and Hydra, where there are no cars, in a day, and Delphi is a long but rewarding day inland.
No cover is drawn for these trips alone, so they sit inside your Athens book, or retitle a cover for the day that mattered most.
Athens photo book ideas
Most Athens trips are short and run in a loop around the Acropolis: up the hill early, down through the old town, out to the museums, then a day by the sea. Here is how to shape those days into chapters.
Build it chapter by chapter
Follow the route you took and let each stop be its own chapter. Turn on day pages and every day opens with a page you can title, so the book reads in the order you lived it.
Up the Acropolis
The Propylaea as you climb through it, the Caryatid porch of the Erechtheion, the Parthenon from its western end, and the city spreading out to the sea from the edge of the hill.
The Acropolis Museum
The excavated streets under the glass floor at the entrance, the original Caryatids at eye level on the first floor, and the top-floor gallery where the Parthenon frieze faces the temple itself through the windows.
Plaka and Monastiraki
Blue doors and cats in the lanes of Anafiotika, the Parthenon from Monastiraki Square, stalls in the flea market, and the Acropolis lit up from a rooftop after dark.
The Agora and the museums
The Temple of Hephaestus framed by trees, the colonnade of the Stoa of Attalos, the Tower of the Winds, and the Mask of Agamemnon in the National Archaeological Museum.
Syntagma, the stadium and Lycabettus
The Evzones changing guard in front of the parliament, the marble tiers of the Panathenaic Stadium, and the Acropolis from the top of Lycabettus as the city lights come on.
To the sea
The columns of the Temple of Poseidon against the sunset at Sounion, a swim in the lake at Vouliagmeni, or the harbour at Hydra from the ferry deck.
The little things
The landmarks take care of themselves. These are the photos you’ll be glad you took.

- Cats asleep among the ruins
- A souvlaki wrapped in paper

Make it yours
A city break suits a compact book, with day pages opening each day: the morning on the Acropolis, the afternoon in the museums, the day on the coast. Use captions for the taverna in Plaka you went back to twice, the name of the rooftop bar with the view of the Parthenon, and the gallery where you finally saw the Mask of Agamemnon. A note can keep the heat of the marble steps underfoot at noon.
If Athens was the start of a longer Greek trip, keep it as the opening chapter and let the islands follow. The route map then shows the line from Piraeus out across the Aegean.
Hardcover, softcover or layflat

Athens photo book questions
Which Athens cover suits a trip about ancient history?
The Parthenon is the classic choice. Athena in her owl helmet suits a trip spent in the museums, and the Ionic capital close up suits anyone who came home with photos of carved details rather than whole buildings.
Can I put Athens and the Greek islands in one book?
Yes. Athens makes a natural first chapter, with day pages marking each ferry crossing after it. Keep an Athens cover, or choose a Greece or island cover on the Greece photo books page.
Is there a cover for Sounion, Hydra or Delphi?
There is no cover named for them, but every cover can be retitled. The Parthenon or the column with olives can say Delphi, and the year sits beneath whatever title you choose.
We only had two nights in Athens. Is that enough for a book?
Yes. A short city break suits a slim softcover or a small square book, with one or two photos on a page so the Parthenon and the rooftop views have room. Or add it as the opening chapter of a longer Greece book.
Which cover suits a summer trip and which suits winter?
The orange column and the red Athena feel warm and summery. The Parthenon and the Ionic capital, both on blue, suit the clear, cool days of a winter or spring break, when the Acropolis is quieter.
Can I make my Athens photo book on my phone?
Yes. Make it on the web here or in the TripMemo app on iPhone, which sorts your trip photos by day and place.
Can I put my own photo of the Parthenon on the cover?
Yes. Photo styles such as Image, Editorial and Poster put a picture of your own on the front, so your Parthenon at sunset or the view from Lycabettus can open the book.
How much does an Athens photo book cost?
An Athens photo book starts at £26.49 for a softcover, £28.49 for a hardcover and £41.99 for a layflat, before delivery. The price grows with the pages you add, and you see the exact total, with delivery to your address, before you pay. UK orders usually arrive in 5 to 8 working days, and we ship worldwide.
How many photos do I need for an Athens photo book?
A short break usually gives 60 to 120 photos worth printing, which fill 24 to 40 pages. A week gives 150 to 250 photos for 40 to 80 pages, and two weeks or more 250 to 400 photos for 80 to 150 pages. Your photos are laid out for you, two to a page by default, and you can change it to one to four.
