The Future is Now
Gardens by the Bay, Singapore
I've seen the photos. Everyone has. Giant metal trees don't prepare you for the scale, the ambition, the audacity. Then the lights come on. The Garden Rhapsody starts and I'm lying on my back in a tropical garden in 2024, watching alien trees pulse with color while tourists from every country in the world do the same. A Japanese family. A group of Indian students. A couple speaking French. All of us looking up at something that shouldn't exist but does because Singapore decided to build it. The future is a choice. This city chose it.

Ten Dollar Michelin
Maxwell Food Centre, Singapore
Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice has a Michelin star. The meal costs $4.50 SGD. I ate it at a plastic table, sweating in the hawker center heat, surrounded by office workers on lunch break. The chicken was perfect—silky and clean. The rice was fragrant with chicken fat and ginger. The chili sauce had the kick of a proper secret recipe. I looked around at all the other stalls, decades of family recipes, the best food in the world for pocket change. Singapore figured out something the rest of the world hasn't: you don't need white tablecloths for excellence.

- “The chicken rice that ruins all other chicken rice.”
- “Every stall here is someone's life's work.”
